Reading is Fun!

How much time do you spend with your eyes glued to a television, computer, or video screen … that includes hand-held. For most kids, the answer is too much!

There’s another way to spend your leisure time, and I don’t mean sports, though those are fine too. Try the wonderful world of book reading. Whether your choice is fiction or non-fiction, the right books will help you see how God is at work in you and in the world around you. Books can take you to places you’ve only imagined. And you can take them almost anywhere, and you don’t need electricity to turn them on.

We would like to help you find some good books. Some reading that we know is interesting for boys your age. First up are books by Sigmund Brouwer and Douglas DeVries. The reason we know we can recommend these is because the authors’ works have appeared regularly in Cadet Quest, and the readers have told us they like them. Brouwer was a regular contributor between 1986 and 2004. DeVries started writing for us in 1988 continues to do so. They have also both written novels for boys, and have both compiled stories published in our magazine and made them into books.

And here’s something you may not have thought of. You can easily earn a merit badge! Why not earn the Junior Cadet Book Reading merit badge, or the Recruit•Pathfinder•Builder Reading merit badge while you’re at it?

Good Reading for Cadets

Indians in the Deep Woods

A hilarious story of a Cadet camping trip, this is the book that started it all for Brouwer. The Calvinist Cadet Corps had a hand in publishing it, with our staff editing and proofreading all the contents. It is still in print and available from the Cadet offices for $5.00 (US or Canadian). It makes a great gift for Christmas, birthdays, or just the end of a Cadet season.

The Accidental Detective Series

Brouwer began writing stories for Crusader (now Cadet Quest) magazine in 1986, and all the stories featured Ricky Kidd, his brother Joel, and his best friend Mike Andrews. He brought these same characters into a series of 15 full length novels for Cadet-age boys called the Accidental Detective Series. The books, published by Bethany House Publishers, are likely to be available at your local Christian bookstore. You can also buy them online from Amazon.com.

Short Cuts

Eleven of the adventures that appeared in Crusader (now Cadet Quest) magazine have been compiled into one surprising book. I call it surprising, because it has so much more than just the stories. Brouwer has also included his personal stories behind the stories — why he wrote them and the lessons he had learned as a boy that made the stories come to life.

Matt Bugs Me!

DeVries wrote 18 Matt and Reggie Adventure Stories for Crusader (now Cadet Quest). They appeared between 1994 and 1999, so it's unlikely that any of today's readers are familiar with them. The book is in paperback format and can be purchased through this web address for $9.95

You can also purchase it from Amazon.com for $11.89.
